A Sound Start for Babies with hearing loss

Welcome to Sound Start Babies!

life-changing early intervention for infants and toddlers with hearing loss

Did you know that when children with hearing loss are given access to the right technology and specialized intervention during the first three years of life, they can develop listening and spoken communication skills on par with their typically hearing peers?

This critical window represents a period of rapid brain development. Unfortunately, if that window closes without proper support, irreversible delays can occur.

Sound Start Babies was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1996, driven by the belief that all children deserve a sound start, and a commitment  to providing the quality and quantity of intervention proven to make a difference.

A pioneering organization in New Jersey, Sound Start Babies now serves families in all 21 counties of New Jersey through in-person services, teleintervention, and our award-winning nursery program.

Whether you are a parent of a child with hearing loss, a professional seeking information or an individual, corporation or foundation looking to make a difference, we’re here to help.

What Parents are Saying

We cannot say enough positive things about Sound Start Babies. We will be lifelong fans and supporters. The best thing about Sound Start was that it got our daughter communicating. When she began, she could only speak three words. Within a few months she was using hundreds of signs. And shortly thereafter, she said mama  for the first time. Sound Start’s programming provided all the supports necessary to help her make unbelievable progress. She grew more than we could have ever hoped, and left the program developmentally on track when it came to her language.

Sound Start Babies Parent

I am so happy with how my son has developed this year at Sound Start Babies.  He began the school year with few words and now speaks in full sentences and even some sign language.  I’m most happy with how he has developed a level of empathy this year through the play-based learning he experienced at Sound Start.

We're so lucky to have Ms. Alyssa on the Sound Sta We're so lucky to have Ms. Alyssa on the Sound Start Babies team! As a new Teacher of the Deaf, she brings with her great expertise, warmth and an unwavering commitment to our mission.

Check out what she shared in our most recent newsletter:

"From a young age, I knew I wanted to make a difference for children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and their families. Growing up Hard of Hearing myself, I experienced firsthand the challenges families faced when navigating a new diagnosis with limited knowledge, guidance, and resources. I was diagnosed with a bilateral sensorineural moderate to severe hearing loss and fitted with aids just at 14 months old. My brother was also diagnosed with the same hearing loss at 5 years old. My parents suddenly found themselves learning an entirely new world, advocating, coordinating services, and doing their best to support us. This is what inspired me to become a Teacher of the Deaf. I wanted to be the kind of support and resources my parents once needed - someone who could guide families through hearing loss. After earning my degree in Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education (STEM), I joined SSB to bring both my specialty knowledge and personal experience to the families I support. There is nothing more rewarding than helping DHH children thrive while ensuring their families feel supported every step of the way."
